Celebrated during July, the festival is a celebration of the agricultural way of life for the Apatanis. Prayers are offered to please the 4 Gods – Tamu, Harniang, Metii, and Danyi to bring in a bountiful harvest season. Fowls, eggs, and animals are sacrificed as part of the ritual. It is also marked by big community feasts served with delicious rice / millet beer. Traditional songs and dances are displayed as part of the celebrations. This day long festival is an occasion where womenfolk brew wine and visit homes of their relatives and present them wine as a symbol of love and affection.

JUL 3 Day 01 Arrive Guwahati – Tezpur / Eco Camp (180kms / 5hrs)

Arrive Guwahati by air/train. Drive straight to Eco Camp, near the Assam Arunachal Pradesh border. Eco camp has comfortable double bedded tents with a thatched roof canopy. Later, walk on the banks of river Bhorelli that flows near to your camp. Overnight in the camp. 

 

JUL 4 Day 02 Eco Camp – Ziro (320kms / 8hrs)

Early Morning go for a walk along the nearby village. After breakfast, start your drive to Ziro. Check into Ziro Valley Resort or similar. En route visit Nyishi villages that you would cross along the way. Evening time permitting visit local market in Ziro. Dinner and overnight. 

 

JUL 5 Day 03 Ziro – Dree Festival

Early Morning, go for a walk to the nearby villages in Ziro. This provides a good opportunity for capturing the people as they go about preparing for the festival. After breakfast, we will drive to the main venue of the festival where all Apatanis gather for their celebration in their traditional attires. Spend the day at the festival venue exploring local traditions, cuisine, and handicrafts.

 

JUL 6 Day 04 Ziro – Dree Festival  

Spend your whole day in the festival celebration visiting villages, exploring tribal lifestyle and festival culture.

 

JUL 7 Day 05 Ziro – Majuli (180kms / 5hrs)

After breakfast, drive down to Dhunaguri Ghat (RiverBank) to cross the mighty Brahmaputra towards Majuli. The crossing of the river will be by small country boats which is always an experience over the river. You will be passing through areas with fields on all sides, fishermen fishing in the rivers and with a sunset on the horizon which makes Majuli a delight. On arrival, check into traditional Mishing village Huts.      

 

Majuli, one of the largest inhabited river islands in the world and the seat of Vaishnava culture in Assam. The great 15th century Assamese reformer and saint, Shankardeva came here and set up ‘satras’ or Vaishnavite monasteries to motivate people towards culture and religion. Also famous for its pottery and mask making, it possesses unique Hindu monasteries famous for their dance and drama performances – the whole island is now shortlisted for future UNESCO World Heritage status. 

 

JUL 8 Day 06 Majuli 

After breakfast, spend your day exploring the island, visiting ‘satras’ – monasteries, interacting with the monks. A walk through the village opens up a whole world of photography opportunities while the Monks in the satras introduce you to the way of life in the Island. Afternoon we will visit the Mishing tribal villages.  

 

JUL 9 Day 07 Majuli – Jorhat

Post breakfast, we will take a ferry across the Brahmaputra river to Jorhat. On arrival Check into a hotel/tea estate.  Afternoon go for a tea tour in a nearby tea garden and make use of this opportunity to encounter the famous tea growing region of India. Later walk around Jorhat town. Overnight.   

 

JUL 10 Day 08 Jorhat – Fly Out

Transfer to Jorhat airport for onward journey.
