Known as “the land of the Aryans”, the villages of Dha and Khanu are settlements of the Drokpa or Brokpa community in Ladakh. The town is located at the confluence of the Shyok and Indus rivers in the Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir, about 163 km northwest of Leh. According to popular belief, Brokpas was part of Alexander the Great’s army and came to the area 2,000 years ago. Brokpas live in five villages. However, tourists are only allowed in two villages, Dha and Hanu. Besides tourists, the town also attracts anthropologists.
